2024.12.26 | First steps: A list of AI movies

On the premise that art helps us understand the world, I dove into the reviews and lists of AI-related films. (Links below.)

After assembling a ridiculously comprehensive list, I narrowed it down to those with high ratings in IMDB or critics’ lists. I’m adding my own reviews as I watch them, so come back for more!

Here ya go:

Best Fictional Films about AI

(in order of IMDB rating)

  • Person of Interest
  • Ghost in the Shell
  • Ex Machina — I watched this one first, and it was a great choice. I had skipped it previously because I imagined it would be a ‘sexy robot” male-wish-fulfillment movie. But it was much deeper and wilier than that! Despite having literally no human female characters, it offers a nuanced critique of human gender norms –as well as indictments of human ego, hubris, gullibillity and expectations. Without being didactic, the film discusses some of the profound and thorny problems that arise from our relationship with artificial intelligence. Highly recommended.
  • Pantheon
  • Her
  • District 9
  • Dark Matter
  • Devs
  • Upgrade
  • The 100
  • Electric Dreams
  • I, Robot
  • Enthiron
  • Caprica
  • The Thirteenth Floor
  • A Scanner Darkly
  • Westworld (1973 movie)
  • I Am Mother
  • TurboKid
  • The Artifice Girl
  • Eva
  • Eagle Eye
  • Extant
  • Calypso
  • Under the Skin
  • Transcendance
  • Project Power
  • Morgan
  • The Lawnmover Man
  • I’m Your Man
